It has been a popular event for film makers, both amateur and professional. The inaugural event in 2003 was filmed for Channel 4's ' Grudge Match' and featured Ace Man v Big Top. 'Nutters With Putters' the crazy golf instructional DVD was filmed in 2004-2006 and Ben Grimsey and Ben Risley used the same title in their 2008 Graduate Film (ISFW). 'Not Winning Not Losing' by Emma Harding featured Dave Harding's attempt to win the 2006 championship. '18 Holes of Crazy' by Tom Wright filmed Ace Man winning the 2008 championship. 'Crazy Serious' was another graduate film (UCA) by Georgina Townshend and Oliver Hayes also based on the 2008 championship.
The event is featured in the books Wacky Nation: 50 Unbelievable Days out at Britain's Craziest Contests and Nutters with Putters
Format
For the first seven years the courses used were both the Arnold Palmer Crazy Golf and the mini golf courses. In 2010, only the crazy golf course was used due to building works.
Three rounds are played on each course over the weekend by all players. In 2010 six rounds were played on the crazy golf course. Each player in a grouping finishes the hole before the next player plays. After six rounds the top players, since 2006 this has been the top 18, go through to the finals. The finals are played under crazy crazy rules.
Rules
Standard BMGA rules apply, except a standard course ball is the only ball allowed. In the final round the following additional rules ('Special rules') apply superseding the relevant BMGA rules:
a: All players in group tee off before any player has 2nd shot
b: Deliberate play to hit anothers ball utilising your own ball is allowed
c: No marking of balls allowed, except when cleaning which can only be done when it's their shot
d: Furthest away plays first
e: Rotational start ie all three players start on 6 of the 18 holes
f: If the ball exits the playing area it goes back to the tee
g: Independent scorers for final
The full rules will be available at the course.
You may use your own putter.
