Review

Date:

Sunday 28th March 2004

Reviewer name:

Jon Angel & Steve Gow

Weather(if applicable):

Overcast, cool (just as you'd expect on the 1st day of BST!)

Overall playability rating:

7/10

Playability:

Rebound shots are pretty consistent owing to the continuous metal perimeter walls. On a few holes, you are guaranteed an ace if you can aim through a gap narrower than "The Pipe" on traditional eternit! Hole 11 resembles "The Lightning", but due to an unplanned slope, the tee shot is very tricky. The course owners plan to improve this hole. Otherwise the course generally plays well.

Design:

  7. Designed and built 'in-house'.

Difficulty Level:

  7. With practise, a sub-20 score is possible (equivalent to a sub-30 score on an 18 hole course).

Skill factor:

  7.

Maintenance:

  8. Having just re-opened after the winter break, the course only needed a quick leaf-blow and sweep to get it looking as good as new (mind you, it is less than a year old)!

Sustainability:

  6.

Other factors:

Appearance:

  5. It'll look a lot better once the areas surrounding the tracks have been painted and one or two other features installed.

Environment:

  9.  The course is set in a park alongside the Thames.  There is also a great view of Windsor Castle. Very pleasant.

Equipment:

  8. They have taken the trouble of getting smooth, non-dimpled balls and there is every different shape and size of putter available.

Originality:

  6. Based on eternit, but feels original nonetheless. Old models of soldiers, policemen and the odd cannon decorate the course.

Venue Facilities:

  9. Cafe serving hot and cold snacks and drinks at fair prices. The course also offers bicycle hire and they run the skate park (next door).

Vicinity Facilities:

  10. Windsor Castle, River Thames are both a short walk away.

Value for money:

  7.

Reviewer comments:

This is a small budget course with a big smile. Staff are very personable and the course is family friendly. Go and try it!
