Italian Open International Tournament Vergiate Review, 3 - 4 November 2001

There's only one thing you can say about this tournament - It's a must.  Only the Italians can organise a tournament in such a way that you get dual playing satisfaction.  You play minigolf during the day then they take you out to play in the evening!  The 'toughest Betong course in Italy' during the day and wonderful food, entertainment and a disco in the evening - what more can you ask for.  Well, a coach, and I was fortunate enough to have the best in Max.

The course is situated smack in the middle of Vergiate - it has a bar!!  The cappuccino is the best I have tasted, the beer is excellent and the grappa - well I never got the chance as I had my fill at the meal on Friday.  Delicious hot snacks are cooked on the barbecue outside and you get the added bonus of chestnuts.

The format: Two and a half days of practice, Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning.  Believe me you'll need this much time, probably more.  I only managed a day, as I arrived late Thursday evening and on Saturday morning I was slightly incapacitated.  I wasn't much better by the first round in the afternoon.  However I got my best score of the three rounds.  The other two being on the Sunday.

The amount of minigolf talent on display was phenomenal, if you need to learn Betong or you just want to have a good time this is the place to visit.  This has got to be the friendliest tournament I've ever been to.

A memento - a slice of the Chief of Police's tie.  They know how to have a good time!

Visit the Vergiate website now and make sure you're part of the fun next year (November 2-3 2002).

Special thanks to Max, Ermes and all of the people who organised and participated, thanks also to Thomas for getting me to and from the bar.

A personal breakdown of the holes. Piste maps care of AceMax.  My purpose was to try for the first time both European style miniature golf equipment and Betong in preparation for the European Championships.  Those who have never experienced this course type are in for a bit of a shock.

Unlike in the UK - if you miss the first obstacle shot you generally have to place the ball back on the tee!  Exceptions are holes 1,2,5,11,12,13 &14.

1. & 2. Relatively simple but for the fact everyone outside the bar is watching.

3.  A real problem, again everyone outside the bar can see and the first shot demands a degree of precision unheard of in minigolf in the UK.  Even when the ball does go through the obstacle there is a difficult shot to follow.

4. An absolute nightmare, the initial shot needs to be even more precise than hole 3.

5. & 6. Once you know how, two relatively easy holes.

7. The longest hole on the course, downhill, severe right to left.  When you finally reach the putting circle your troubles have just begun.

8. Easy to get through the first obstacle, the cone is another matter.  Second shot varies from where at the base of the cone you are.

9. Oh dear.  Precision again!  It doesn't help if you've got a severe case of the yips either!

10. & 11. Easy and Easiest.

12. 13. &14. Simple

15. & 16. Back to precision. Nerves probably shot by now.

17. Straight shot unless you fancy yourself as a bit of a player.

18. When you know how - simple.  If you don't, expect a seven.
