Scott Coe, Michael Webb, Graham Southern and Jon Angel, the new founders of London Minigolf Club, met on Sunday morning at Broomfield Park for a friendly match, played over two rounds.
In the first round, Scott took an early lead, and didn’t drop a shot until the 10th, where in fact all players incurred a penalty shot by electing to play around the difficult obstacle. Graham, who at this point was 3 shots off the pace, then aced the 11th and was right back in it. But when Scott holed out in 5 on the 12th everyone seemed to be in with a shout, especially Michael who was playing very fluently and had now taken the lead. Scott came back though, with 2s on the 16th and the difficult 17th and 18th, to level with Michael on 44.
Graham had a good start to the second round, acing the 2nd, but it was Jon who made a quiet push for the lead by completing the first 9 holes in 19 shots. By now dark rain clouds had started to appear and threatened to ruin the match, but Michael was still playing fluently and eventually regained the lead at the 11th. Graham at this point was too far behind to catch the leaders, but was unfortunate to see his ball go out of bounds at the unlucky 13th, (not his first out of bounds in the match). When Jon aced the 15th he was still in 3rd place, but imagine his glee when Michael took 7 at the 17th. Michael would later claim that a dog had barked and put him off! Scott then eagled for the second time at the 18th (a feat not often witnessed on that hole) leaving Jon requiring an ace for the match. He failed to get it, thus proclaiming Scott the winner, Jon 2nd, Michael 3rd and Graham 4th.
The shower we feared never really did fall – but Scott, the lowest ranked of all 4 players, reigned supreme on the day!
A great first day in the life of the London Minigolf Club.
