LONDON INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT

Qualifying leg:

On Saturday, Jon Angel, Graham Southern and Scott Coe contested the inaugural LIT on a fine late summer's day, with guest players BMGA Chairman Peter Parr and newcomer Tim Waters providing further competition.

The players got off to a slightly tentative start at the fearsome 1st hole, but by the 6th there was barely a stroke between Jon, Graham and Scott, with Peter on 2 over. However, Jon began to hit his stride with a superb run of three aces and a 2 at the arduous 9th to take a decisive lead which he held to the end. Jon was playing a cool, unruffled round and confirmed the promise he had previously displayed at Broomfield by getting down to a fine 3 over by the end of the first leg.

With Peter taking that round with 38, the real action was in the rearguard, with Graham and Scott trading blows all the way to the end. Graham's 15th hole 4 was negated by Scott's poor 3 on both the 16th and 17th to end the leg on 43 apiece.

Their struggle would continue into the second leg, when Tim took over from Peter as the guest, showing skill beyond his inexperience to register a 45. Jon continued to set the pace and, with aces on the 2nd, 6th and 16th holes, duly booked his place in the final with a 40, giving a two-round total of 79.

For a while, it looked as if Scott, very much the rank outsider of this group, was set to join him as he rattled off a succession of 6 2s from the 4th to the 10th holes, and acing the 12th. It led to a drop in guard at the 15th as Scott fluffed his putts completely, posting a maximum 7 to put Graham, never far away, 1 in front. However, a 3 for Graham at the 17th as against 2 by Scott ensured that, at the end of two rounds, they both registered a 43 and 46 to set up a cliffhanger play-off. The atmosphere could have been cut with a cricket stump!

Graham set the running on the 1st with a 3, which Scott just managed to match. However, the 2nd proved the decisive as Graham deftly used the incline to play-off-winning effect by getting a hole-in-one. Scott could only hope, but hope was not enough to overcome a feeble 2. Game: Graham.

(Graham beat Scott on the 2nd hole in a sudden death play-off for a place in the Grand Final against Jon)

Final

Coming off the back of the British Open quarter-finals earlier on Sunday, both LIT finalists could have been forgiven for letting the nerves get to them. But Jon and Graham were clearly determined to keep their cool as they started off.

Graham got off to a flying start, playing consistently and immaculately and achieving a run of 2s up to the 8th, broken only by the 7th...where he scored a 1! Jon had the misfortune to have his ball marooned in the tunnel on the 5th, forcing a 4 there. By the dreaded 15th, though, he came back strongly to close to within a shot of Graham, thanks in part to a 10th hole ace.

The 15th is notorious for being the 'maker' or 'breaker' hole. For Graham, it proved to be the former as he shot a magnificent 2, a feat rarely achieved here, and put the pressure right back on Jon. In the event, he could manage but a 4, and not even a final hole ace by Jon was enough to deny Graham a well-deserved victory and the LIT championship for 2002.

In view of the form in qualifying, Graham might have looked the outside bet but, no doubt buoyed by a career best 35 in the Open qualification round, he found the match-winning form required to see off a strong competitor. A fascinating contest, and one that will certainly ignite further interest as the LMC's season continues.
