British Doubles Championships 2006
The Sideburns, Keith Kellard and Jon Angel Triumph
Golf in Poole? What next? Football in Badminton? Cricket in Rugby?
And so the cream (or at least most of it) of British minigolf descended upon the English Riviera for the inaugural BMGA Doubles championship.
This unusual format made for some interesting pairings - the husband and wife team of Bill and Ruth, the Sonny and Cher of minigolf. But the Davies/McIver pairing raised more than a few eyebrows - would their love/hate relationship survive the rigours of a doubles tournament? Only time would tell...
After being turfed off the course for illicit practice (trespassing) we were allowed back on to get the measure of this tricky unforgiving course. In the meantime the exact format was being decided and the draw was being made
Groups A & B were very evenly spread out, but the group of death was certainly Group C which contained Jon Angel, Keith, Jam, Chris Harding and John Moore... only two of them could get through.
There weren't very many upsets, although The Booze Brothers destroyed all opposition in their group without even being seeded, and Steve and Rocky managed to force a draw with Tim and Ted. Jon and Keith somehow managed to survive a major scare against Double Boegy (a team containing a 4 year old boy) - what next Jon? You're going to end up losing to a foetus!
The surprise team of the tournament was certainly Rocky and Steve, the Mad Hatters, who got to take on the Bugger Grips, erm, I mean Sideburns...
The surprisingly sober Booze Brothers got to take on the surprisingly dry Wet Dream Team...
What happened? Well. in short the seeds won, and thus the final contained the Top 4 players in Britain.... what excitement.
Every picture tells a story - what can I say? In the end the London Boys came through like the champs they are, and the Dry Nightmares were sent packing back to Hastings.
It was good to see some new faces anyway, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves - roll on next year
