Ace Man wins British Championship

  British Championships, Planet Hastings Crazy Golf, 12-13th July 2008

British Minigolf Championships 2009, No sorry 2008.

Much to the annoyance of the local blackbird family, who were used to having the place to themselves, the best players in the UK and Ted McIver descended upon the exalted greens of Planet Hastings Crazy Golf. While for some it was a simple homage to the finest course in the UK to others it was an attempt to become British Champion. Seven rounds of competitive crazy golf in sunny Hastings, what more could one ask for? Did anyone say reasonably priced drinks? Or maybe the company of the friendly co-hosts; helpful, polite and highly customer focused. Exquisitely landscaped by the devoted and selfless team who tend and nourish this wonderful location the greens are like priceless Persian carpets. Clambers, Planet Hastings, hosting the first major of the year witnessed one of the most dramatic final rounds staged in this country, more of that later........

Day 0

Friday, free praccy day. The place was heaving with talent, the discounted reasonably priced drinks were flowing but the ice creams were most certainly not as Ace Man desperately tried to hoard them for himself. A confident Andy 'No2' Exall marched off midway through the day to play a round of the British Matchplay championships on the seafront minigolf against Jas Kukielka. Winning 7&6 he must have thought this would be his weekend.

Day 1

Of the familiar faces on show the most famous was BMGA founder Peter Parr, who was returning to the punishing grind of professional minigolf.

Peter 'Mr Empton' Emmerson of Sealand started the ball rolling with a highly cultured 30 and led the field after the first round. The big bad boys of Planet Hastings Crazy Golf Club were bunched up behind.

The second round saw a new leader, Tunbridge Wells' finest Andy 'No.2' Exall with Tim 'Ace Man' Davies maintaining second spot.

After rounds three and four the top ten were fairly settled. No2 in the number one spot. Ace Man in second, four shots behind. And in third place Ted proved the most reliable player scoring 35,35,35 followed by 35, but was still eleven shots adrift of the leader.

The evening's entertainment began with another match up in the British Matchplay championships, Ruth 'Plate Thrower' Bullin v Ace Man. In a very tense affair the Ace Man shaded it 1 up.

This was followed by the BMGA Links Darts Semi final, Rich 'The Bass' Hopkins v Tim '180' Davies. 301, straight in, double out. Richard 'Squire' Gottfried wooed the crowds with a demonstration of finger jousting. The 180 sign was held aloft often as the 18's and the occasional 81 were scored. 180 overcame The Bass 2-1. Sean 'FreeBird' Homer scored, the only thing noteworthy the BMGA President did all weekend.

Day 2

Andy 'No.2' Exall had beaten all 5 round totals on this course and on this sort of form would have won all of the previous competitions held here including the British Open. He would have beaten Heinz Weber, Christian Zimmermann, Thomas Zeininger, Christian Freilach, Karsten Hein and Jouni Valkjarvi (some Finnish bloke you wont have heard of) and any Brit you'd care to mention and if anything the course has gotten harder over the years with the redesigned 10th. He then went on to establish a new record of 195 after six rounds (average 32.5). The two-time runner up in the World Crazy Golf Championships looked to have his hands finally on a major tournament victory. And with that the TV crew arrived.

Going into the last round Andy could look with satisfaction on some excellent scores and wonderful powerplay putting over the Saturday and Sunday.

He had a 5 shot lead over second placed Tim ‘Ace Man’ Davies. The organisers at this stage had considered banning him as this the event was not going at all the way it was meant to. Thankfully they reconsidered and let Andy continue.

Ace Man had been here before in the 2003 British Open where he held the same lead over Christian Zimmermann. To his never-ending shame he had succumbed at the second play-off hole.

In a remarkable turn around Andy's 35, a perfectly respectable score on a fast playing surface was dwarfed by the destructive power of the Ace Man. Ten aces and 8 twos destroyed poor Andy's chances. If this was cricket, Davies had achieved a hat trick and Andy was his third victim, out for a golden duck. This wasn't crazy golf, this was an elemental unstoppable force that swept away anything in its path, buildings, trees and opponents. It was a Mexican wave of tsunami proportions! Not since Thierry Cruybeeck (Stratford) and Jouni (Belfast) have these shores seen such a performance. A new course record of 26 and the best score ever by a Brit in this country. Is Tim Davies the greatest putter in the world? Is he better than Tiger Woods? Will he stuff the Europeans in Margate? Modest Tim would only say yes.

A huge gap between Tim, Andy and the rest of the field only highlighted the near perfect mini golf they played over two days and seven rounds.

Disgraced ex British team Captain, ex Planet Hastings team Captain and X man without the special powers, John 'Big Top Ted' McIver managed a creditable 3rd place. Bereft of technique he still somehow manages befuddlingly to get the ball in the hole. Even the 10th, specifically redesigned to scupper his chances, was no obstacle as he averaged a stunning 1.14 over the tournament.

In the seething cauldron of Planet Hastings much was expected of the other local players. However Jo 'Cupcake' Williamson's attempt to end Ruth 'Plate Thrower' Bullin’s reign as Women’s Champion was doomed to failure once Ruth shot her best ever score of 30. Indeed Ruth's mixture of the steady and the spectacular secured fourth place, in stark contrast to husband Bill Bullin and his gruesome tournament average of 41.14. Bill’s Senior title was lost (Although he said it was at the engravers) to Ace Man of the tournament Tim Davies. Will we wait as long to see the trophy as we did to see the kit?

Emily 'Coach' Gottfried came third in the race for the Lady's title, the whole of Luton are still celebrating.

Nick 'Top Hole' Chitty, in his first full season of competitive mini golf finished in fifth place. Another future star honed in the Planet Hastings crazy golf foundry. He manfully held off the attentions of current World Crazy Golf Champion Chris 'Who' Harding who languished in sixth.

In an epic tournament there were many noteworthy individual achievements.

Andy 'Sarge' Booth, injured but not bowed, bespoke tournament referee, resplendent in designer high viz bib was Solomonesque in his authority. He only had to issue a few verbal warnings, mainly for slow play, occasionally for foul language. Apparently he missed all the tripping incidents, Ronaldo would have been seething. Ace Man, the yardstick of moral correctness, even felt obliged to let the ref know of all the swearing from his playing partners in the final round. Deafened by long evenings in the Smugglers discussing the rulebook with Rich the Bass he seemed oblivious. Notably no one was booked for non-sportive headwear or shockingly for not sitting on the seating provided.

Trevor 'Pumbah' Exall, despised in Hastings for taking the Planet Hastings Crazy Golf Club Open claret jug away, was a distant seventh. All those free rounds unused, outrageous!

Another local gem discovered by the Planet Hastings scouting team, David 'Film Star' Harding, managed to hold off the challenge of Peter Emmerson for the Ace Prize and took ninth place overall.

Terry 'The Gift' Exall, in the last round finally managed to hit the ball over the bridge on his first attempt, many of his previous rounds were ruined by a "bridge too far". The loan of a special ball from the Ace Man for acing the second cost him a five in the sixth round and lost him 10th place to Brad "The Fist" Shepherd.

Dave Forrest put McXdresser's wardrobe to shame with some scanty shorts. An emergency session of the EC on dress code was quickly convened. Did these contravene the WMF rules on sportswear? The jury is still out.

A new game was discovered this weekend - THE PETER EMMERSON LOTTERY. Participants have to choose a number between 29 and 49, then wait and see if Peter shoots that figure in his next round.

The winning numbers this tournament were 30, 40, 39, 34, 41, 34, 45

Stat Splat: Five current members of the Planet Hastings Crazy Golf Club were in the top ten. Eight out of the top ten were past or present PHCGC members.

And to crown it all, Ace Man moves back to the coveted number one spot in the official British Minigolf Association rankings.

Ace Man profusely thanked the management at the course for their professionalism, courtesy and high motivation in running the best course in the United Kingdom.

In return the Planet Hastings course manager thanked Tim for gracing such an occasion with his unique talent, sporting behaviour and remarkable putting ability.

"How do you manage to fit so many trophies in your home" he asked.

Tim modest as ever, smiled knowingly, shrugged his shoulders and suggested the BMGA just give him all the tournament trophies to keep.

Ted Skelton made a special guest appearance to hand out the trophies and prize money. The hosts were indebted to Adam for his organisational skills. If only he'd been trained properly!

3 days of crazy golf for £25, Friday thru Sunday. That's 50 hours of available sunlight, for sadly there is no floodlighting, which works out at 50p an hour - what a bargain! And for those with miner's helmets and an inability to sleep 72 hours at the price of 35p per hour and think of those savings on hotel bills.

Stat Splat: Of all the courses in the UK, Planet Hastings Crazy Golf Course has hosted the most British Mini golf Association events.

The tour moves on to Margate for the British Open.
