When did you start playing?
I've played since I was a small child.
When did you take up crazy golf seriously?
We used to have a card school going in the 90's and we were looking to put some money on something else. All of us improved rapidly. It got to the point where some of the guys wouldn't play me because they were sure they'd lose. However, the hard core of Mark 'Ice Man' Spry, John 'Big Top Ted' McIver and myself carried on. In 1999 we found out that the British Open had been held at our local course and nobody had told us. We were pretty miffed. As soon as I found out there was a competitive crazy golf scene out there I was straight on the internet and found the British Mini Golf Association.
When was your first BMGA tournament?
The BMGA Players Championship 2000 at Broomfield Park, London. Big Top & Ice Man were meant to be there but made no real effort so I went with my heavily pregnant partner Vicky instead. She looked on in the rain as I went on to win my debut tournament using my Ping putter and a standard course ball on a heavily waterlogged course. No one since has won their debut tournament on the BMGA tour. Tilting at Windmills by Andy Miller features this tournament. The same year I won the British Championship and became the number 1 British crazy golfer.
What do you do for a living?
I was a full-time house husband for six years and in 2007 I started managing (with Big Top) the best miniature golf course in Great Britain, if not the World - Planet Hastings Crazy Golf (aka Clambers.) In mid-2009 I had to stop running the course due a number of slipped discs. The rest of the time is spent in house husbandry and playing.
How does your family support you?
I have two sons Timmy (9) and Huwy (6), both like to play crazy golf. We play together frequently and they are the best training partners a crazy golfer could ask for! My partner Vicky, the ex-British Womens Champion is now my coach.
What do you put your success down to?
Good technique and better attitude. I train hard when I get the chance and make copious notes on whatever courses I play. The support I receive from my family is the most important aspect of my winning formula. If I'm playing my 'A' game no one else has a chance.
What are your future plans?
I'm developing my own putter design - The Ace Man Pro Putter - it's radical!
I'm shortly going to finish my coaching qualification and start training Britain's new generation of crazy golfers.
Big Top and I have written a crazy golf instructional book and DVD.
I'm going to make www.miniaturegolfer.com even bigger and better.
I'm just finishing off writing 'Win at miniature Golf'.
I've seen you before!
You may remember me from Countdown (1985), Countdown Masters (week beginning 17/04/89 & wb 22/10/90), Chain Letters, Brainwave, on Channel 4's Big Breakfast. Or as a mystery guest in Sporty facts, on a promo for TV scrabble, Grudge Match (2003) and now Eggheads (31/7/09).
If money was no object would your plans be any different?
Yes I'd be travelling the World playing in crazy golf tournaments! I'd also love to do a tour of all the courses in the UK!!
